Professional Learning & Growth: A Journey of Constant Evolution

Professional Learning & Growth: A Journey of Constant Evolution

At Pan-American School, we firmly believe in the importance of lifelong learning, the constant process of reflection, inquiry, and action that each one of us goes through as we look to build a better world through education.  Each year, our faculty undertake a series of professional inquiries, exploring diverse themes that not only enhance their pedagogical strategies but also model the experiences that our students go through each and every day: reflection; goal setting; inquiry; research; reflection; analysis, and measuring growth and impact.

Professional Learning & Growth Fair, Wednesday 8 May

Last Wednesday, each member of the faculty presented their professional inquiries to their peers, celebrating their learning journey and impact over the course of this academic year.  It was a wonderful showcase of the diversity of interests, passions, and impacts that our team has had from ECE through to Grade 12.

Professional Learning Themes

Our faculty explored a wide array of topics, each chosen for its potential to impact our students' learning experiences, and aligned with Pan-American School’s Principles of High-Quality Learning. Among these, several key themes emerged, reflecting our team’s commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and real-world application.

  • Innovation Through Technology and AI: The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as Sherpa for student feedback in the Diploma Programme (DP), and the use of technology in project management, showcases the way some educators leveraged technology to enhance learning and teaching efficiency.
  • From Theory to Practice: Pan-American School educators are bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, particularly notable in subjects like DP Economics. This approach ensures our students can connect classroom learning with real-world situations, preparing them for future challenges.
  • Inclusivity and Differentiation: A significant focus has been placed on understanding and supporting students with diverse learning needs, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Strategies for higher concentration, engagement, and executive function highlight our commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment where every student can succeed.
  • Empowering Student Success: Differentiation strategies and the development of comprehensive literacy plans underscore our belief in personalized learning. By recognizing and nurturing individual student strengths, we unlock their potential, fueling success across various aspects of their education.
  • Building Foundations for Lifelong Learning: From early childhood education (ECE) team leadership to enhancing literacy and motor skills in younger learners, our educators are laying the groundwork for lifelong learning. Initiatives like fostering a love for reading and developing independence and self-management skills from an early age are pivotal.

Pan-American School Professional Learning & Growth Model

At Pan-American School, we have developed a holistic model based on best practice research and recommendations, particularly that of Dr Gerard Calnin, Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne's Graduate School of Education and developer of the IB’s model of learning-centered leadership.

Each member of our team also works with clearly articulated Standards which are as follows:

Teachers

Learning Support Specialists

Pan-American School Teachers:

  1. Are lifelong learners who engage in ongoing professional inquiry and learning
  2. Demonstrate leadership
  3. Establish a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment for a diverse population of students
  4. Know the content and teaching strategies of their teaching area
  5. Facilitate Learning for Their Students
  6. Reflect on their practice

  4. Use their knowledge of the school environment, child development, and curriculum and instruction to improve student achievement.
  5. Reflect on their practice

Over the coming months, we will be reflecting on these Standards - which were adopted in 2020 - to streamline and align them with the school’s Strategic Priorities and Definition of High-Quality Learning (2023). We look forward to sharing these with the learning community in August to help provide an insight into the standards we hold ourselves to, and that guide our professional perspective at Pan-American School.

Reflecting and Looking Ahead

As we reflect on these themes, it is clear that our educators are not just teachers but lifelong learners themselves. They embody the very essence of the IB learner profile, continually seeking ways to enhance their practice for the benefit of our students. This commitment to professional inquiry not only enriches our school community but also ensures that we remain at the forefront of educational innovation and excellence.

I want to take this moment to recognize and congratulate the dedication and passion Pan-American School faculty have shown in their professional development journey this year. Their willingness to explore, innovate, and adapt is what makes Pan-American School a vibrant and dynamic learning community.

I look forward to continuing to work with this talented team of educators, and welcoming the new additions in July, as they model the learning experience for our students, fostering an environment where curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking flourish.

Yours in learning,
