Pan-American School History

1971: Pan-American School (PAS) is founded in Los Yoses, San José, by James Genis ('Mister'), with 35 students and five teachers.

1993: PAS expands to include a High School section, opening its doors in Los Laureles, Escazú.

2006: PAS receives its first international accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

2010: PAS introduces a Middle School for grades 6 to 8 to facilitate the transition between Primary and Secondary education.

2015: PAS becomes an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, authorized to offer the Diploma Programme (DP).

July 2019: PAS becomes the first school in Costa Rica to offer the full IB continuum, authorized for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP).

Oct 2023: Pan-American School completes the Collaborative Learning Protocol Join Accreditation with NEASC & the IB, one of the first schools in the world to undergo this new, learning focused accreditation. The school receives re-accreditation and is commended for its commitment to high quality learning.

May 2020: James Genis ('Mister'), the founder of PAS, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of educational excellence and dedication to students.

Aug 2024: The school joins the “Founding Fifty” of the world’s first accreditation in AI, the Responsible AI in Learning (RAIL) Endorsement from Middle Schools Association (MSA). Working with learning schools globally, Pan-American School ensures safe and responsible use of AI in areas such as AI Litracy, AI Safety and AI Ethics.
