International Calendar

Pan-American School operates using the international calendar, from August to June, divided into two semesters. School breaks are a holiday week in October, six weeks of vacation in December and January, and Easter Week.

Daily Schedules

Early Childhood Education: Includes PlayKids, PreKinder, and Kinder.

• Regular schedule from 7:25 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
• Extended day Program: PlayKids until 2:40 p.m. PreKinder y Kinder until 1:15 p.m.
• Optional co-curricular activities from 1:40 to 2:40 p.m.

Primary: Includes Preparatory, I y II cycles (first through fifth grade)

• 7:25 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
• First and Second grade until 2:40 pm on Monday and Wednesday.
• Third, Fourth and Fifth grade until 2:40 pm from Monday to Thursday.
• On Fridays, all leave at 1:15 p.m.
• Optional co-curricular activities from 1:40 to 2:40 pm and 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.  

High School: includes Middle school (6th to 8th year) and High School (9th to 12th year)

• On Monday to Thursday 7:25 a.m. to 2:40 pm. On Friday 7:25 a.m. to 1:25 p.m.
• Sports teams training from 6:15 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Exercises 7: 30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
• Optional co-curricular activities from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.

International Opportunities

These consist of opportunities to travel to another country to participate in an academic, athletic or cultural program that emphasizes integrated learning, respect for differences, and student responsibility and independence. Examples: Mark Day School Student Exchange, Space Camp, AASCA Tournaments and Leadership Training, Global Initiatives Network, and International CAS programs, such as the Children of Haiti Project.

Services

Uniforms, Books, and Supplies

Pan-American School students are required to use the complete and correct uniform. For the convenience of families, uniforms may be purchased at the school in the Supplies Department or during the Uniform and Supplies Fair at the beginning of each school year. Required textbooks and certain other materials are included in the monthly materials fee. Supplies may be purchased at the Uniform and Supplies Fair at the beginning of the school year or at the store of your choice. Cafeteria

Pan-American School has cafeteria service during the entire school day. The philosophy of the cafeteria is to provide attractive and healthy food options at a reasonable price. Families may use various forms of payment if they do not wish to have their child carry cash. Students in Early Childhood Education utilize the cafeteria only if they participate in the Extended Day or co-curricular classes. Cafeteria can be contacted by e-mail pas.cafeteria@panam.ed.cr

Co-Curricular Classes and Opportunities

Each semester a schedule of classes and clubs is offered after the regular school day according to student and parent interests and requests. These include artistic, gastronomic, sports, and intellectual activities, for students at each grade level. Every student can participate in one co-curricular class without incurring additional expense; a fee is charged for enrolment in more than one class. “Opportunities” are more specialized classes on campus for which a fee is charged.

At Pan-American School we believe there are great opportunities for learning outside the classroom, especially when combining recreation with discovery of knowledge. Thus, we encourage student participation in a large variety of programs in and out of the country. Examples: Science Fair, Model United Nations, Global Initiatives Network, Math Olympics, Chemistry Olympics, Visual Arts contest of ACEP, Reds and Blues, Oratory and Spellings Contests, and intramural athletic matches. Student Transportation

Pan-American School offers parents a supervised bus service to and from their homes.

The bus service covers most places in the metropolitan area of San José, Alajuela and Heredia.

Please let us know of your needs and we will try to accommodate you.

The buses must comply with national security norms and additional requirements of Pan-American School. Buses receive preferential treatment during drop off and pick up hours.

Counseling and Learning Support

Pan-American School has a staff of professional psychologists and learning specialists that support and offer guidance students for their social, emotional and academic development through specialized services that provide information, intervention and coordination of community educational resources.

We believe members of our PAS Community can reach their maximum potential by increasing their self-knowledge, self-discipline and assertive communication skills together with the practice of values.

Toward this end, we strive to create a physically and emotionally safe environment within our school.

Tutoring

As a complement to classroom teaching, the School helps students who need or want to improve their performance in a given subject area. Learning specialists also refer students to external tutors when necessary. Beginning in Middle School, students have unstructured academic time during which they can meet with a teacher of their choice for help with a particular subject.
