Curriculum & Instruction

We seek to hire and develop highly effective teachers and provide a curriculum that is challenging, engaging, and relevant. We aim to provide stimulating classroom environments in which the student is the creator of his/her own learning, teachers are facilitators, and parents are supporters.

Values, Ecology, and Service

Values are the principles that guide our daily lives. The values of Excellence, Responsibility, Solidarity, Honesty, and Respect guide everything we do. Service is the expression of values and learning within our curriculum by detecting needs, and identifying and implementing solutions related to community and ecological issues. Ecological awareness is an essential part of this process. Pan-American School represents its values utilizing an oval.

Technology, Innovation, and Investigation

We seek to enrich and reaffirm the learning experience providing opportunities for innovation, integration, analysis, creation, and communication utilizing technological resources. We seek to develop scientific thinking which promotes a critical worldview and interdisciplinary problem solving.

Sports, Health and Wellness

We seek to increase the participation of students in both competitive and noncompetitive sports and other recreational activities, develop healthy lifestyles, and enjoy a high level of wellbeing. We also believe that this is accomplished through a positive school spirit.

International Mindedness

Pan-American School seeks to contribute to the development of responsible citizens who actively participate in the construction of a sustainable, peaceful and just world. According to Dr. Richard Harwood and Kate Bailey (2013):

International Mindedness (global consciousness) is a person’s capacity to transcend the limits of a worldview informed by a single experience of nationality, creed, culture or philosophy and recognize, in the richness of diversity, a multiplicity of ways of engaging with the world.

Bilingualism

The Pan-American School community is comprised of individuals from a variety of cultural, linguistic and social backgrounds. Although the school provides a primarily English-Spanish bilingual education, multilingualism is encouraged through co curricular and elective classes and personal study in additional languages.

Pan-American School is committed to prepare students for full written and oral fluency in English and Spanish. Courses are offered in both languages, and instruction in other languages may be made available when resources and student interest permit. Sports and Wellness

Participation in sports and fitness is a pillar of Pan-American School’s program. Our sports program includes participation in tournaments in soccer, basketball, volleyball, and cross country. This includes local and international events, organized through our membership in the Association of American Schools of Central America (AASCA). Competitive sports teams in Secondary School practice early in the morning, before the beginning of the school day.

All Secondary students participate in a daily fitness and wellness program, by which they choose a physical activity during the first period of each morning.

Special Needs

Students with special learning needs may request significant and non-significant curricular adaptations. Teachers, learning specialists, and psychologists work together to determine and document the specific needs of each student and to make the necessary adaptations to enhance learning. Students needing significant adaptations are accompanied throughout the school day by a special needs teacher, the cost of which is covered by the student’s family.

The school also has a program to assist students needing accelerated or enhanced instruction. Students enter this program through referral from a teacher of a particular subject.

Health Services

Staffed by a physician and an assistant, our Health Office offers Pan-American School community members primary care for immediate detection and treatment of sickness, as well as care for minor injuries and first aid in the event of any emergency at school. The School also has a 24-hour contract with an ambulance service.

Ecology

Pan-American School is a leader in ecological programs, and the entire community is involved in recycling and conservation efforts. We are pleased to boast the highest distinction given to schools for these efforts by the Ministry of Education: the five-star Bandera Azul flag.
